About Me |

About me eh.... I hate writing this sort of thing so most of this is
going to be rambling and only semi-accurate. First essential statistics.
I've brown hair, curly and long with a tendancy to go every direction.
People have theorised that my hair is a seperate entity to myself, which
is consistent as it sometimes threatens to bite off the fingers of those
that touch it. Don't ask me why it threatens people, maybe it'll write it
own's webpage eventually to satisify the curious out there. I've blue eyes
and glare at things I'm concentrating on, things that annoy me, sometimes to
annoy people or at random other intervals based on the phase of the moon and
the lack of nubile women dancing for my amusment. I'm about 1.8m (6ft for
the imperialists) out there and weigh about 145 pounds which is something
in kilograms. Needless to say with a height to weight ratio like that,
I'm built like a stick and have being likened to a mop because of the hair.
Fortunatly I no longer need to go out to hunt and kill my own food being
a stick is not a problem. About all that heavier bulk would get me is the
ability to hit keys harder. Right now, I reside in two places, sortof. Most of the time, I live in Limerick where I research for my PhD two days in the week. The other three days, I am a Java applications developer for IBM. Most times, I telecommute to work but every fortnight I live in Dublin because telecommuting does not cover everything. I'm not going into the details of the research I'm doing because I'm too lazy to write it up here. I have a BSc. in Computer Systems awarded by University of Limerick. Because of the acronym, I generally refer to myself as a being a BiSCuit. Research has shown I'm probably a Nestle Hob Nob but thats neither here nor there. Amazingly, I'm also a Certified Engineer accoring to the Institute of Engineers in Ireland. This is interesting because if software engineers built a shed, no one would agree on what shape it would be, it would built with different types of materials everywhere, held together with duct tape or paperclips and no one would understand how it was powered exactly but it would magically stand up and no one would question it until it was noticed there was no door. As far as I can gather all being a certified engineer gets me is cheaper car insurance and I know how Jacobs get the Figs into the Fig Rolls. Undaunted after the BSc, I also acquired a Masters in Computer Science initially supervised by Dr. John O'Gorman (RIP) and later by Dr. Patrick Healy who now supervises my PhD. The thesis for anyone that is interested. I later developed it into a book that is being published by Prentice Hall that is available for free download fom the Prentice site. The research itself involved researching and documenting exactly how the Virtual Memory subsystem in Linux works. Initially it was an easy enough project but as it changed almost daily, it puts a new meaning to the phrase "a moving target". I first started with one on POSIX Real Time systems in February 2001 and changed to this one in July 2001. Outside of work, I don't really get up to much. I was President of the Computer Society here in U.L and was a voluntary sysadm for a few years but I'm a lot less active than I was, being out of college and all. I generally only really do anything if it gets horribly broken or, more importantly, something I'm using gets busted up. It was a good giggle while it lasted but it's a lot of work to do in exchange for abuse. I'd write more, but the kernel compile finished so I'm going to some real work. If you want to know more, that's just too bad. |
